A barrette, also known as a hair clip, hair slide or clasp, is a clasp for holding hair in place. A clasp is used to secure the barrette. The clasp opens when the two metal pieces at either side are pressed together. They are used to keep hair out of the eyes, or to secure a bun, a French twist or a ponytail. Barrettes are also sometimes used purely for decorative purposes. Large barrettes as long as 3-4", are designed to pull back longer hair or a large amount of hair and are usually worn at the back of the head.
Braid is the symbol of strength and unity. There are three types of braid used here. A three-strand French braid, four strand square braid, which is commonly used in horse hair products and three-strand mystery braid made with leather.
Horsehair is the long, coarse hair growing on the manes and tails of horses. Horsehair can be very stiff or very fine and flexible. Mane hair is generally softer and shorter than tail hair. The texture of horsehair can be influenced by the breed and management of the horse, including natural conditions such as diet or climate.
Most horse hair braiders use a square or box braiding technique to create the strands. The strands are about 1/8" square and then can be sewn together side-by-side to make a wide surface for any project. For example, a seven-strand hat band will be 7/8"wide.
